In an article on the MedPageToday website, noted medical writer Howard Wolinsky details his own journey with prostate cancer in a particularly moving and insightful manner. At Fans for the Cure, we feel his piece is a valuable read for both men over age 40 and for the family, loved ones and community around them.
Wolinsky’s article contains many useful insights, particularly (a) how active surveillance is often not even offered as an alternative, and (b) how “wait-and-see” is a hard-sell to men and their partners. His doctor friend admitted to him “that medicine belatedly was realizing that patients like me with early cancer probably don’t need surgery or other treatment.”
